International Casualty Treaty

Our International Casualty Treaty portfolio includes Third Party Liability, Professional Liability, Motor Liability and Specialty.


  • Overview

    Our casualty treaty portfolio includes third party liability, professional liability, motor liability and specialty casualty. We accept business on a proportional or non-proportional basis via Lloyd’s brokers.

  • Territories
    We have the capability to write and provide support for an international portfolio, including a limited element of US domiciled insureds.
    Our principal areas of development are UK, Europe, Scandinavia, Asia Pacific, Canada and the MENA region.
  • Third Party Liability
    Including public, products and employers liability.
    Our maximum line is GBP 5 million. We accept business from the UK and abroad, on an international, national or regional basis, derived from both commercial and personal lines portfolios. We accept business with exports to the US, and a limited amount of US domiciled exposure. We manage our US exposure with standard reinsurance wordings.
  • Professional Liability
    Including professional indemnity, directors & of f icers, medical malpractice and financial institutions and warranty & indemnity.
    Our maximum line is GBP 5 million. We accept business from the UK and abroad, on an international, national or regional basis. We manage our US exposure with the use of standard reinsurance wordings and we will only consider protecting business exposed to ADR level II and III in exceptional circumstances.
  • Motor

    Third party bodily injury and third party property damage written outside the US. Our maximum line is 10% on unlimited layers, though with a normal maximum well below this in the UK. Our maximum line for limited layers is GBP 5 million. Currently, we will consider business with, or without, provision for capitalisation of periodical payments.

  • Specialty

    Classes such as environmental impairment liability, stand alone warranty & indemnity and cyber liability will be underwritten on a case by case basis.

  • Distribution

    We write business predominantly through Lloyd’s brokers, or those with which we have a TOBA.

  • Our expertise

    Our International Casualty Treaty portfolio is led by Stuart Dale as Class Underwriter. Stuart joined ArgoGlobal in late 2011 after holding senior underwriting roles at QBE and Sagicor.

Stuart Dale
Class Underwriter

Team Biography:

Stuart Dale

Stuart began his career as a graduate at Hart Re on their European Casualty Treaty Team. In 2001 he joined what was then MJ Harrington Syndicate 2000 where he became an underwriter on the newly established International Casualty Treaty portfolio which later became Limit, and eventually QBE 566. In 2008 Stuart left QBE to head the newly formed Sagicor Casualty Treaty arm, and joined ArgoGlobal in 2011 to take the portfolio forward. Stuart has experience of underwriting a wide range of casualty classes, across different territories, with a non US focus.

Luke Birtwistle

Team Biography:

Luke Birtwistle

Luke joins ArgoGlobal from Canopius Group, where he served as Assistant Underwriter, International Casualty Treaty Reinsurance, since 2013. In this role, he worked on London market and international business across a range of classes, predominantly on an excess of loss basis, including professional and environmental liability, workers’ compensation, professional indemnity, D&O, financial institutions, medical malpractice, motor, retrocession & STXL lines. Luke began his career in financial services as an Equity Research Analyst at Keefe, Bruyette & Woods.

Stewart Muirhead
Wordings Manager

Team Biography:

Stewart Muirhead

Stewart brings more than two decades of experience acting for and advising international insurance businesses to ArgoGlobal. He joined from Aon UK Limited where he spent more than 10 years, most recently as Associate Director / Solicitor - Head of Aon Claims Solutions. In this role he was tasked with drafting and advising the UK and US broking divisions on London market brokered policy wordings and slip construction. Stewart was also responsible for legal and claims advisory, project management and committees in the UK and US. He is a qualified solicitor and began his career with Hill Dickinson in 1993 acting for insurers in casualty claims, later practising in Australia with Carter Newell Solicitors, before returning to London in 2002 to join Hextalls Solicitors as an Associate.

Judith Fumero
Liability Claims Manager

Judith Fumero

Judith joined ArgoGlobal in July 2012 as Liability Claims Manager. Prior to joining, Judith was Chief Adjuster for Professional and Financial lines at XCS. She has over 23 years experience in the insurance industry, in both the Lloyd’s and company markets. Judith has handled claims from a variety of different jurisdictions and classes including professional indemnity, financial institutions, D & O and property. She has had significant involvement in handling the major claims affecting the London market such as WTC, tax shelters, and PSAs. Recently she has co-ordinated and managed the Madoff claims.
